OTHAKARHAKA FOUNDATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Othakarhaka Foundation (OTK) is a community-led nonprofit organization founded in 2012 in Mulanje District, Malawi, by Ida Puliwa Mwango. The name Othakarhaka means “passing on the kindness,” a principle that guides the organization’s work and culture. What began as a small group of local volunteers meeting under a tree has grown into a grassroots movement serving rural communities through a network of more than 6,800 volunteers. OTK was established on the belief that lasting change comes from within communities themselves. Its mission is to remove the barriers that prevent girls and vulnerable children from accessing education, while strengthening the families and communities around them. OTK recognizes that poverty, food insecurity, poor health, gender inequality, child marriage, limited livelihood opportunities, and inadequate housing are deeply connected. For this reason, OTK takes a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of educational exclusion rather than treating education as a stand-alone issue. Today, OTK implements integrated programs in education, healthcare, youth empowerment, vocational training, sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, community welfare, and protection of vulnerable populations. Through long-term educational sponsorships, girls are supported through secondary school, university, technical training, and other pathways. Community health initiatives provide cervical cancer screening, menstrual health education, family planning awareness, palliative care, pediatric healthcare, and outreach to families in remote areas. Youth empowerment programs equip young people with practical and life skills that create pathways to income, confidence, and independence. OTK is also expanding its focus on sustainability and local enterprise. Its skills development work is designed to train young people in practical trades while producing goods and services that meet real community needs. This includes opportunities in tailoring, carpentry, joinery, welding, fabrication, construction, and other income-generating activities. New initiatives around solar-powered learning, plastic-waste recycling, and school furniture production would build directly on this model by combining education access, environmental protection, youth training, and local production. What makes OTK unique is its volunteer-driven and community-owned model. Community members are not simply beneficiaries; they are active participants in creating change. Volunteers contribute time, local knowledge, mentorship, service, and small monthly financial contributions. This culture of service creates a ripple effect where people who receive support are encouraged to give back and strengthen their own communities. Over the years, OTK has helped thousands of people access education, healthcare, agricultural support, livelihood training, and essential community services. The organization continues to grow while remaining deeply rooted in local leadership, trust, and sustainability. By investing in girls, empowering youth, and building practical community solutions, OTK is helping create a future where every child can access education and every person has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
