GITUAMBA ECO-FI PROJECT Gituamba ECO-FI project is an Initiative by the Gituamba ECO-FI group a MSME registered by the Medium and small enterprise authority of Kenya that seeks to involve farmers and the general public in activities geared towards organic farming practices, agri-business and Environmental conservation.Established in 2024 by the founder Holbert G Ngugi in collaboration with a team of like minded individuals the Gituamba ECO-FI Project has continued to empower farmers and members of through schools, churches,CBOs,SHGs and partnerships with the private sector,civil society organizations, Government and the community members themselves as they are the end beneficiaries.The project is located in Gituamba ward, Gatundu north sub-county, Kiambu county,Kenya. OBJECTIVES 1.Socio-economic Empowerment 2.Organic farming 3.Agri-business 4.Environmental conservation 5.Partnerships for sustainability 6.Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ACTIVITIES 1.Azolla production 2.Bio-fertilizers production 3.Avocado production 4.Passion fruit production 5.Vegetable seedlings production 6.Apiculture 7.Aquaculture 8.Herbs production 9.value addition and marketing of horticultural products 10.capacity building and training 11.Networking and linkages ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND IMPACT 1.Training of 10 professionals in Organic farming, agri-business and Environmental conservation via the IYF FREE WEEKEND ACADEMY 2.Distribition of 20,000 vegetable seedlings to 100 households mainly from marginalized groups i.e women,youth, children,men,the elderly and PLWDS 3.Training of 100 farmers in organic farming, agri-business and Environmental conservation practices 4.Registration with MSEA 5.Advocacy and awareness on the United Nations SDGs 6.Partnerships for sustainability; the IYF FREE WEEKEND ACADEMY,KCB Foundation, MSEA, churches,schools,CBOs,SHGs. 7.The Avocado export market training -100 farmers 8.Awareness creation to over 1000 direct beneficiaries in the community and beyond 9.Creation of 10 active demo farms within the community 10.Income generation and jobs for over 100 farmers 11.Cohesion of society 12.Processing and packaging of Honey 13.Construction of Azolla ponds in farms 14.soil testing in over 100 farms FUTURE PLANNED ACTIVITIES 1.Export marketing of horticultural products 2.Cottage industries to enhance value addition 3.Establishment of a Horticultural products marketing centre CHALLENGES 1.Lack of information 2.Lack of capital and collateral 3.Change of attitude 4.Deforestation and Degradation of ecosystems 5.Government beauracracy 6.Certification to international standards 7.Exploitation by brokers and middle men during marketing of horticultural products and theft of the Horticultural products along the value chains due to lack of proper structures 8.lack of proper market for farm produce 9.poor agricultural practices 10.Climate change SUSTAINABILITY 1.Income generating activities 2.Community ownership and good will 3.partnerships for sustainability 4.Certification by relevant authorities(National and International) CONCLUSION So far the Gituamba ECO-FI project has continued to empower farmers and members of the community bearing in mind the underlying challenges.This has been made possible through faith, passion, resilience,hard work and determination, goodwill and ownership by the community members and partnerships to derive maximum benefits across board.With continued support the project aims at empowering 10,000 farmers in the region and beyond.
