CONCERN FOR ACTION IN OUR COMMUNITY GHANA (CONFAC-GH) CONFAC-GH is a Ghanaian grassroots environmental and community development NGO. They focus on turning local environmental problems into community-led solutions. 1. THE WORK CONFAC-GH DOES CONFAC-GH works across 3 main areas: 1. Environmental Protection & Waste Management - Community clean-up campaigns and drain desilting to prevent flooding - Plastic waste collection, segregation, and upcycling into products like school desks, chairs, bins, and eco-bricks - Climate action and tree planting to combat environmental degradation - Advocacy for proper waste disposal and zero-waste practices 2. WASH AND PUBLIC HEALTH - School WASH Clubs and hygiene education in basic schools - Campaigns to stop open defecation and promote handwashing - Linking clean environments to reduced malaria, cholera, and water-borne diseases 3. YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND LIVELIHOODS - Training and employing youth as "Drain Guardians" for waste collection and monitoring - Skills training in upcycling, recycling, and small business management - Creating green jobs through the circular economy 4. Behaviour Change AND Advocacy - Social and BEHAVIORAL Change Communication in schools, markets, and communities - Working with Traditional Councils, School Authorities, and the Municipal Assembly to influence policy 2. COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE CONFAC-GH is primarily based in the Upper East Region of Ghana, with a strong focus on: - KASSENA-NANKANA MUNICIPALITY- Navrongo and surrounding communities - Schools, major markets like Navrongo Central Market, and flood-prone zones/drainage hotspots - They partner with Traditional Authorities, Youth Groups, Women’s Groups, and Basic Schools to reach households directly. 3. THE DIFFERENCE THEY MAKE CONFAC-GH shifts the approach from "wait for government" to "community takes action". - FROM WASTE TO WEALTH: Instead of burning/burying plastic, they collect it and turn it into products schools and markets need. - FROM YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT TO GREEN JOBS: They give young people stipends, skills, and leadership roles in protecting their own community. - FROM AWARENESS TO ACTION: They don’t just do campaigns. They pair SBC with tools, bins, and a system for reporting and collection. - DATA-DRIVEN: Using hotspot mapping and WhatsApp reporting to show the Assembly where the problems are. 4. Impact as an Environmental NGO While specific numbers vary by project year, CONFAC-GH’s impact model delivers: - ENVIRONMENTAL: Cleaner drains, reduced plastic in gutters, less flooding and mosquito breeding in target areas. Tons of plastic diverted from dumpsites. - SOCIAL: Thousands of pupils and community members reached with WASH and anti-litter messages. Stronger school-community partnerships. - ECONOMIC: Income and skills for youth through collection and upcycling. Low-cost furniture and bins produced for schools. - SYSTEMS: A working model for municipal waste collection that the Assembly can replicate and scale. Proof that Zero Waste can work in a Ghanaian municipality. IN SHORT: CONFAC-GH makes communities cleaner, healthier, and more self-reliant by getting youth to collect waste, turning plastic into products, and changing how people think about the environment.
